A corner is enough

Picture in picture for any Mac window

System picture in picture is for some video players. Toplet shrinks any window into a corner and keeps it on top: a web video, a call, a chat, a build log, a lesson. Pin first, then shrink. Crop if you only need part of the window.

8 seconds: the lesson shrinks to a corner and stays on top. Illustrated windows, not a recording of the app.

Where system PiP stops

Safari and a few players can pop a video into a small window. A terminal has no such button. Neither does Figma. Embedded players on web pages often have none. Toplet captures the window, so it does not wait for that app to ship an official PiP button.

How to make the small window

  1. Pin the window, or point at one that is already pinned.
  2. Use the picture-in-picture hotkey, or choose it from the right-click menu or the menu bar.
  3. Drag it to a corner. Pinch, or drag an edge, to resize. Double-click or press the hotkey again to put it back.

A click still brings the original window forward. This is not a view-only mirror.

Crop a video out of a web page

Draw around the video. The crop becomes the small window.

A lot of lessons and streams sit in the middle of a page, with recommendations around them. System PiP cannot reach that. With Toplet:

  1. Pin the browser window.
  2. Choose Crop and draw around the video.
  3. The cropped piece becomes picture in picture. The rest of the page stops eating the screen.

DRM streams sometimes cannot be captured. That is a system limit. Pause the pin if you hit a conflict.

What people park in a corner

If you want the whole window where it is, not shrunk, use always on top.

Questions

How do I turn any Mac window into picture in picture?

Pin it, then enter picture in picture, or use the hotkey. Drag and resize the small window.

What if a web video has no system PiP?

Pin the browser and crop the video. The crop becomes picture in picture.

Can I use the small window?

A click brings the original forward. Picture in picture is a smaller live view, not a second full app you type into.

Can I have more than one?

Yes. Each pinned window has its own picture in picture, crop, and opacity.
